Newly Constructed 5-Storey Building LEANS
It would have easily been a man-made disaster had the civil defence volunteers not rushed to the spot immediately and evacuated two adjacent buildings as a precaution.
The drama began unfolding around 6 am. Neighbours told Deccan Herald that they first heard a loud sound. It took a while for them to figure out that the building had caved in without actually collapsing. The structure stood menacingly like a leaning tower, precariously close to a collapse.

Our Comments
If you closely examine the picture, it clearly shows that the exteriors are safe and sound. Only the building has leaned down on side. This shows that no proper information about the soil was available or no soil investigation has been done. The building would have been founded on pocket of soft clay, or filled up soils which are not suitable for foundations.Soil Investigation cost about 5% of the actual construction. In India, to save this amount most of the local contractors, mestris or even some cases Civil engineers try assume or speculate the strength of the soils and execute the foundation works. This assumption can lead to cracks in the building which are patched up, or this assumptions can even lead to differential settlements in soil resulting in damaging the structure. In this scenario one may have to go for retrofitting or reconstruction of the structure.
It is essential for any building to have a proper soil investigations to be conducted before the actual execution of construction. Just don't BUY the information of the contractor or mestris thinking the soil is strong and the construction can take place.
